The InSinkErator Badger 5XP is a small but powerful garbage disposal. While many of the garbage disposals that we reviewed have large chamber capacities of 30 to 40 ounce, the Badger 5XP has a 26 ounce grind chamber capacity. It’s intended for smaller kitchens. And as a Badger model, it’s a no frills product. It won’t have the same sound insulation as the InSinkErator Compact, Essential, or Excel, but it’s a reliable little workhorse nonetheless, featuring a 3/4 horsepower motor.

Simple Workhorse
Featuring a 3/4 horsepower motor, the InSinkErator Badger 5XP is capable of grinding through many tough foods. This product would appeal to those looking for a simple product without compromising on power. It doesn’t have fancy stainless steel components or sound proof technology, but it will do its job in grinding whatever food scrap you throw at it.
26 oz. Grind Chamber
This InSinkErator garbage disposal is one of the smallest of its kind. If you don’t have much space to spare under the kitchen sink it will work very well for you. Inside the chamber there is a single layer of grind. Some larger disposals have two layers, meant to ensure well-chewed up food scraps. Even with a single layer of grind, it works well because of its 3/4 horsepower motor. We rarely recommend getting a 1/2 horsepower motor or less because those are not as capable to handle all sorts of food. So with this Badger you can ensure that it will grind up your food scraps properly thanks to its 3/4 horsepower motor. We do, however, strongly advise against putting too much at once into the disposal as it needs some space to work with and it has a smaller chamber.

Durability
There are some concerns about the durability of the InSinkErator Badger 5XP. Some people have reported that their unit started leaking after a couple of years of usage. This could be due to the fact that the body is made out of galvanized steel and began to rust. If a disposal leaks at the body, the best thing to do is replace it since this is a difficult and costly area to repair. There are a number of things you can do to prolong the life of your garbage disposal however. Many people encounter problems because they do nothing to maintain it. Yet garbage disposals are used so often that they require maintenance more than any other home appliance. One of the simplest things you can do is to keep it clean. This will prevent your garbage disposal from rusting prematurely.
Power Cord
This unit doesn’t come with a power cord so if you don’t have one from an old InSinkErator, you’ll need to purchase one unless you plan to hard wire the disposal. The Badger series focuses on affordability so they are very basic and often do not come with a power cord. They also don’t have fancy features like sound insulation to dampen the noise level. If you want something with more features like noise reduction then we recommend taking a look at the Evolution series.
Powerful
Many people were surprised by the power they get from such a basic garbage disposal. InSinkErator tends to make some of the best garbage disposal on the market so as long as you get something with a 3/4 horsepower motor or above you shouldn’t have any problems with achieving a powerful grind.

There are many other disposals with better sound insulation than this one, which has almost none.
