Does your house use a septic system? You may have heard that it’s not a good idea to use a garbage disposal with a septic system. This is because of concerns that food waste won’t decompose well and cause the septic tank to overflow. You’ll end up having to empty your tank more often. To solve this problem, the InSinkErator Evolution Septic Assist was made specially for septic systems. It’s equipped with a natural enzyme treatment to safely release bacteria to help food waste break down and keep everything in working order.

The InSinkErator Evolution Septic Assist has the following features:

  • A Bio-Charge cartridge containing over 300 million enzyme-producing micro-organisms that gets injected into the garbage disposal each time it operates.
  • Two stages of grind that will chew up tough items like bones
  • One of the quietest noise levels when in operation.
  • Vibration-free when in operation.
  • 3/4 horsepower motor.
  • 40-oz. capacity chamber that is made of stainless steel for added durability.
  • 4-year in-home limited warranty. For the entire warranty period, you will receive free house calls (including parts and labor) when your InSinkErator needs to be installed, repaired, or replaced. InSinkErator boasts a network of 1500 professionally trained service agents.
  • A sink mount that allows for easy installation and replacement.
  • Wall switch activation making it easy to operate.
  • Made in the USA.

Bio-Charge Injection Technology

The main feature that allows the InSinkErator Evolution Septic Assist garbage disposal to work with a septic tank is the Bio-Charge enzyme treatment. This natural bacteria is safe for the environment, your drain fields, and pipes. Its function is to help break down food waste (including grease, fats, proteins, and starches) and solid waste (toilet paper) to prevent any scum and sludge buildup in your septic system. It also works as a deodorizer.

It’s important to note that it does not contain any harmful chemicals so it will not damage your septic system or pipes. A cartridge will last about 3 to 4 months for the average household, depending on how often you use your garbage disposal. Therefore the average household will need to replace it about 3 times a year. The cartridges are changed by simply pushing a button to release and snapping a new one in place.

MultiGrind Technology

This InSinkErator garbage disposal is just as powerful as the others in the Evolution series. It features two “layers” of grind so that you can efficiently break down difficult food scraps like bones and ensure there are less clogs and jams to deal with. Having a decent motor and grind power are important to your septic system to minimize potential problems.

InSinkErator Evolution Septic Assist Customer Reviews

To find out how well the InSinkErator Evolution Septic Assist actually works, we went through hundreds of customer reviews. This is a summary of those reviews. It will give you a full picture of what to expect when you purchase the Evolution Septic Assist garbage disposal.

Great For Septic System

The real test for this garbage disposal is how well it performs with a septic system over time. There were plenty of stories where customers who have purchased the InSinkErator Evolution Septic Assist over 5 years ago say their septic system has never had any problems. In one instance, the customer purchased theirs 7 years ago, at the same time they last pumped out their septic tank. When they called to have their tank pumped out again, they were told the tank wasn’t even 25% full. So it shows that the Septic Assist breaks down waste well over years. In general, if you want to use a garbage disposal but you have a septic tank, make sure you get one that has additional functions to break down waste or you’ll have to spend thousands in costly septic system repairs.

Plenty Quiet

As expected of the InSinkErator Evolution series, the SoundSeal technology really reduces the noise level significantly compared to standard garbage disposals. If we compared the Septic Assist to the other InSinkerator Evolutions, it would be quieter than the Compact, as quiet as the Essential, and almost as quiet as the 1.0 horsepower stainless-steel Excel. What’s special about the InSinkErator Evolution are the anti-vibration connections that do not rattle the countertops or pipes, ensuring it operates as quietly as possible. You’ll have to really listen to be able to tell that it’s actually running.

Easy Installation

Installation for the Evolution Septic Assist is easy. It comes with easy to follow instructions and if you are replacing it with another InSinkErator, it should take an easy 30 minutes to install because you don’t have to refit it. If you are replacing it with another garbage disposal brand, you may have to rework some pipes. With respect to the Bio-Charge cartridge, it is snapped onto the front. So whenever you need to replace it, you just push the button to release and snap a new one in place. You should be able to install the whole unit even if you have minimal plumbing experience.

Should you buy the InSinkErator Evolution Septic Assist?

You should buy it if you have a septic tank. There are plenty of positives in this garbage disposal. It has a great-sized chamber, it’s powerful (a 3/4 horsepower motor will chew up almost anything), it’s quiet, it’s easy to install, it’s safe for your septic system, and it functions well with it. For some reason, the unit sells for about 50% less with free shipping from Amazon compared to the InSinkErator company site and hardware stores, so you should definitely pick it up online. The Bio-Charge replacement cartridges are much cheaper too.

    1. Hello, apologies for the late reply. First check your local regulations and if they don’t have any restrictions make sure you perform regular maintenance on your system and you should be fine.

  1. My plumber installed this model in my kitchen —and we are on city plumbing, on the fifth floor of a condo building. Is there any benefit to continue to use the septic assist or is it a waste of money?

    1. You can continue to use the disposal like a normal disposal (i.e. without refilling the cartridge). But there’s definitely a benefit to using the enzyme treatment – helps keep your pipes clean and sink and drain smelling good. 😉
